Madagascar: Louvain Cooperation fights to save mangroves and biodiversity

Résaux sociaux
Contenu

Over the last 23 years, Madagascar has lost 25% of its mangrove forests. Faced with this alarming degradation, Louvain Coopération is actively involved in preserving these vital ecosystems, which are essential both for local populations and for the health of our planet.

Why is this important?

It is vital to preserve mangroves, mangrove forests established on coastlines, because they:

  • Provide a breeding ground for many animal species, some of which are on the brink of extinction.
  • Absorb much more carbon dioxide than other ecosystems, which is crucial in combating climate change.
  • Provide habitat and resources for local populations who subsist on fishing.

Multiple actions to protect mangroves

awareness
In Madagascar, together with its local partners, Louvain Coopération is carrying out numerous actions to protect and improve forest management:

  • Organisation of reforestation campaigns with local populations.

  • Raise awareness of the importance of preserving mangroves.

  • Creation of fishing reserves to enable the renewal of resources.
  • Support for local authorities in their mission to manage and monitor protected areas.

Social and economic support for local populations

fisherman

In addition, we are committed to improving the incomes and living conditions of the populations residing in these ecosystems in order to ensure responsible use of the mangroves. To make this a reality, we:

  • Support sustainable economic activities that do not have a harmful impact on these forests.
  • Establish solidarity savings groups.
  • Let's support fishermen's cooperatives to help them exploit the potential of the fishing sector.
