Bolivia is a multicultural country with strong indigenous roots: the Constitution recognizes 36 nations and their languages.
According to 2019 UN reports, Bolivia was one of the most advanced countries in Latin America and the Caribbean in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but this is without taking into account the great disparity that exists between the different regions and the very negative impact that COVID-19 has had.
The country is facing a systemic crisis, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is affecting the economy, education, health and the political system, with devastating consequences for the most vulnerable populations.
Health in Bolivia:
- 25% of children under five suffer from malnutrition.
- The diet is low in vitamins and minerals and does not guarantee adequate nutrition, putting the local population at greater risk of non-communicable diseases.
- Gender-based violence is another major problem facing Bolivia. Recorded cases of death due to sexual and physical violence rose from 76 in 2015 to 116 deaths in 2019.
In terms of agriculture:
- A third of the working population is employed in the agricultural sector.
- Food shortages are linked to poverty, declining soil fertility and undiversified production.
