Louvain Cooperation helps save lives in Benin: A Commitment to Women’s Health

Contenu

Every day, around the world, 830 women die during pregnancy or childbirth. In Benin, a country marked by one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, Louvain Coopération stands as a shield to defend women's health, regardless of their financial means.

In Benin, 523 Mums die for every 100,000 live births.
Compared with just 6 in the European Union, the figures are alarming.

Guaranteeing affordable access to healthcare

In Benin, Louvain Coopération is developing mutual health insurance schemes that include the provision of healthcare services for women. These mutual health insurance schemes are real lifesavers by ensuring that costs are never a brake on life. Thanks to services such as:

  • Antenatal consultations
  • Echograms
  • Breast births and caesarean sections

The third-party payment system allows women to receive the help they need without eating into their savings. These initiatives, which will account for 15% of mutual insurance interventions in 2021, are vital in the fight against maternal and neonatal mortality.

Our fight doesn't stop there. Education and awareness-raising are our weapons to prevent this scourge and give these women the necessary knowledge about sex-specific diseases and reproductive health:

  • Network of peer educators: An army in training to spread knowledge about prevention and reproductive health.
  • Screening campaigns: Crucial initiatives to detect breast and cervical cancers, guiding patients towards an accurate diagnosis and rapid treatment.
