Last May, nature unleashed its wrath on South Kivu. Torrential rains caused severe flooding, sweeping away entire villages in the Kalehe region, precisely where we carry out some of our projects.
More than 400 people lost their lives and several thousand are still missing. Many of them were involved in our projects. Most of the survivors lost their homes, fields and livelihoods. Many schools and health centres have also been destroyed.
Our local partner, ASOP (Action Sociale et d'Organisation Paysanne), immediately went to meet the victims and assess their needs.
These tragic events took place three months ago, and urgent action has been taken to meet the vital needs of the families affected and displaced. This humanitarian support will come to an end fairly quickly. But Louvain Coopération and its partners will continue to be there for them. It is therefore vital to support reconstruction and enable the survivors to get back on their feet.
To make ends meet, these families have to develop new means of subsistence. We cannot leave them behind!
