Jérémy, aged 13:
his story didn’t end there.

“My dad’s no longer with us and my mum’s ill. She’s not quite right in the head. When I was little, one day she went to see some nuns and asked them to look after me and my four brothers and sisters. We stayed with them for a long time, but I couldn’t concentrate properly on my studies. So they sent me to this centre so that I could study better. Now I feel at ease.”

Jérémy was taken in at a very young age and was able to continue his education at a centre partnered with Louvain Coopération. Today, he is receiving support to gradually build his future.

Enfants de Kinshasa

Texte

In Kinshasa, it is estimated that more than 20,000 children are living on the streets. Some have been abandoned; others have fled violence, family breakdown or extreme poverty.

On the streets, they are exposed to hunger, violence, exploitation, drug use and further social breakdown.

But these children are not defined solely by what they have been through. With the right support, they can regain a sense of direction, return to school, reconnect with their loved ones and build a new future.

To get back on their feet, a child needs more than just a roof over their head.

“These young people face a great deal of suffering. Psychological support is therefore essential to acknowledge their suffering, support them and enable them to fulfil their potential.” Stéphanie Mbelu, psychologist in charge of the project.

Paths to independence

The social and professional integration of young people is not simply a matter of teaching them a trade or helping them find a job. It also involves creating the conditions that will enable them to take their place in society, become more independent and build a sustainable life plan.
